There are only a few tickets left for the first edition of the year of Pecha Kucha in Vancouver, but you can be forgiven for not hearing about Pecha Kucha yet. With only a bit of advertising, this worldwide cultural phenomenon has been growing steadily since the first event in 2008, and now sells out large venues with regularity. Pecha Kucha is a night of talks based on a 20×20 format: each presenter is allowed 20 slides, and 20 seconds for each slide. It keeps talks concise, and forces presenters to focus only on the most interesting and important parts of the talk. Presenter lineups are always interesting, featuring the most creative people in the city talking about their work and their passions. Designers, architects, activists, artists, politicians, and musicians are regularly featured, ranging from Mayor Gregor Robertson to the owner of the Penthouse nightclub.
Pecha Kucha is a worldwide event: it was started in Tokyo by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture, and now holds events in 382 cities. In Vancouver, Pecha Kucha nights are produced by local design firm Cause+Affect. The next Pecha Kucha Vancouver night, the 15th edition, is Feb. 24th at the Vogue.
