What’s our mission?

What is Vancouver? What does it mean? The shape and form of our city help to define us, and the people of Vancouver in turn have helped create a unique city, taking lessons from the sucesses and failures of other metropolises. Vancouver is a global crossing point, a global force, frequently the centre of attention. And yet… not. We reach for the mantle of a world-class city, but it remains elusive. It hasn’t quite stuck yet.

The people of Vancouver are special. While we decry the expeses of high living costs, Vancouver attracts a creative, young, and driven population, on the leading edge of cool, and the healthy living and green movements.

But where do we find the essence of the city? Where are the places, and who are the people that are on the cutting edge, in the know? Where are the centres of cool in this city, what do the smart people DO? What kind of person does Vancouver consider a good person? I’m setting out to answer these questions for myself, and hopefully to add to a sense of community in Vancouver, something I can’t quite find yet. I will travel across the city and across occupations to find the most interesting places and things, the most creative people, and the most inspiring ideas.

I’m very interested in architecture, design, media, and communication, and am a huge music nerd. I’ll be looking at the Vancouver culture and arts community, our retail and business landscape, and our public figures. I make no claims of objectivity, and I hope to inspire some public discussion over what makes Vancouver great, and what we need to do better.
